Some pig and poultry manure is dried and sold as fertilizer.Industrial pollution

is reduced by restricting certain industries to 'offensive trade areas' like that

at Kwai Chung.New sewage treatment works are being built to serve North West

Kowloon, and the new towns of Sha Tin and Tuen Mun.In addition, some sewage

outfall are being extended to deeper water for better disperson.The Pollution Control

Unit of the Marine Department investigates sea pollution, and controls the collection

of floating refuse.The Unit regularly inspects tankers discharging at oil terminals,and

fines pollution control boat,with equipment and chemicals to disperse oil slicks,

contain oil spills,and skim oil from the surface of the sea.Each year 7 845 tonnes

of floating refuse are collected from the harbour.There are now eight mechanised

refuse collection vessels,and a boat to boat refuse collection setvice now operates

in the main typhoon shelters
